The monastery tour in Egypt is a full-day bus trip, where you will visit the two oldest monasteries of Christianity.
In addition to the actual monasteries, the tours also include visits to the bakery and mill belonging to the monastery. These helped the monks living there to lead an autonomous life. In addition, each monastery has numerous churches.
The heart of St. Anthony’s Monastery is the Antonius Church located within. This sacred building dates back to the 6th century. However, most parts of the monastery date back to the 10th century. This includes the numerous frescoes within the buildings.

Itinerary
Morning:
- 4:00 AM: Pickup from your hotel in Hurghada by Luxreisen
- Enjoy a ride through the desert on newly built roads in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. After about 2 hours of driving, we have already reached St. Anthony’s Monastery.
Afternoon:
- Here at the monastery, a hermit lived in a cave on a 680-meter-high mountain. This was more than 1600 years ago. You can reach this cave via a staircase with 1000 steps.
- In this cave, you can admire the drawings and ancient writings of the hermit Anthony. You also have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain landscape, the sea, and the desert from there.
- After that, we continue our journey through a rugged valley and reach St. Paul’s Monastery. The monastery got its name from its location, as it was built on the cave of Paul, a Christian hermit who died in the 4th century.
After the visits to the Monastery of St. Anthony and St. Paul, we will take you to an authentic restaurant where you will enjoy a delicious, traditional Egyptian lunch.
After lunch, we will head back to your hotel in Hurghada and reflect on the impressions of the visits to the Coptic monasteries of Egypt during the return journey.
We will reach your hotel around 5:00 PM.
